EA888 Gen 1 & 2 Tuning Guide
VW / Audi EA888 Gen 1 & 2 Tuning Guide
The 2.0T TSI that came before the IS20.
Gen 1 is the transverse 2.0T TSI that replaced the EA113 FSI in the MK6 GTI: 200hp, direct injection, and the same honest response to a tune. Gen 2 is the revised engine that followed, built in two layouts: transverse in the Euro MK6 GTI, Scirocco, Tiguan, and Audi TT (the CCZ family), and longitudinal in the Audi B8 A4, A5, and Q5 with the Audi Valvelift System. Both tune much like the EA113 they replaced: a strong Stage 1 on the stock turbo, a real Stage 2 with bolt-ons, and a bolt-on K04 as the big step.
Transverse vs Longitudinal: why it changes the tune
Gen 1 was transverse only. Gen 2 came in both layouts: transverse in the MK6 GTI, GLI, Jetta, Scirocco, Tiguan, and Audi TT (the CCZ family), and longitudinal in the Audi B8 A4, A5, and Q5. The Audi variants add the Audi Valvelift System (AVS), a two-stage exhaust-cam lift. All share the 2.0T bottom end and the IHI turbo, but the ECU and calibration differ by platform, so the calibration is not interchangeable.
Orientation also sets the turbo upgrade. The transverse cars, Gen 1 and the Gen 2 CCZ family alike, take the proven BorgWarner K04-64 as a direct bolt-on, the same upgrade the EA113 MK5 GTI made famous, which carries them past 300hp. The longitudinal B8 has its own K04 path, but it needs a longitudinal-specific kit (APR, CTS, Unitronic) with the housings clocked for the layout, not the transverse K04-64 and not the B7 EA113 setup. Done right it reaches the mid-300s, and we write big-turbo software for the B8 beyond that.
EA888 Gen 1 / 2 Engine Codes at a Glance
Confirm your code before you order. Gen 1 is transverse only. Gen 2 came transverse (the CCZ family) and longitudinal (the Audi B8 / B8.5).
A note on the turbo: the factory unit is an IHI turbocharger, commonly labeled K03 by frame-size convention. The bolt-on upgrade is the BorgWarner K04-64.

Transverse Stages (Gen 1 and Gen 2 CCZ)
The MK6 GTI and its transverse siblings, Gen 1 and Gen 2 CCZ alike. 200hp from the factory, and the stock turbo has plenty left in it.
No parts required. We target around 18 psi on the stock turbo. A big, safe jump from 200hp on a simple OBD flash.
Intake and exhaust. The map is built around the added airflow and pushes the stock turbo to roughly 22 psi, near its limit.
BorgWarner K04-64 turbo upgrade, a direct bolt-on replacement for the factory IHI unit. The classic big step on the transverse 2.0T: more turbo, supporting fuel, and a calibration built for it.
Big turbo. Custom work by nature, where fueling, injectors, and the whole supporting package matter. Reach out and we will spec the build.
Gen 2 (Longitudinal, B8) Stages
The Audi B8 A4, A5, and Q5. Same displacement, longitudinal layout, Audi Valvelift, and its own calibration.
No parts required. A clean, strong gain on the stock turbo that wakes up a heavy quattro car, especially the part-throttle response.
Intake and exhaust. We recommend an upgraded diverter valve, and a clutch upgrade on the manual cars to hold the extra torque. This is the ceiling on the stock turbo.
A longitudinal-specific K04 kit (APR, CTS, or Unitronic: the S3 K04-64 with housings clocked for the B8) bolts on and carries the car into the mid-300s. This is not the transverse K04-64 and not the B7 EA113 setup. K04-specific tuning required, so reach out and we will sort the calibration.
For power beyond the K04, we write big-turbo software for the B8. Fully custom: turbo choice, fueling, and supporting hardware all matter. Reach out and we will spec the build.
Fueling: the Real Limit
On a direct-injection 2.0T the fuel system, not the turbo, is what eventually caps these engines. The good news: the factory fuel system is perfectly adequate for Stage 1, Stage 2, and a base K04 calibration on standard pump gas. It only becomes the bottleneck when you push beyond a K04 or introduce ethanol, and at that point it needs a comprehensive upgrade, not a single part.
Three components hold the engine back, and they have to be addressed together:
| Bottleneck | The upgrade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| LPFP | Upgraded in-tank pump | The stock in-tank pump cannot maintain feed pressure to the HPFP at high demand |
| HPFP | Upgraded internals | A larger pump bore for the fuel volume a big turbo or an ethanol tune needs |
| Injectors | Larger DI injectors | Factory DI injectors max out around 400 hp; step up to larger DI injectors |
Known Weak Spots
These engines respond beautifully to a tune, but they have a few well-known habits worth knowing before you add power.
Carbon buildup and water pump: like every direct-injection 2.0T, the intake valves coat over time, requiring a walnut blast to restore airflow. The plastic water pump and thermostat housing are also frequent sources of coolant leaks and should be inspected on higher-mileage cars.
