GTS calibrations are developed for vehicles with all factory emissions equipment intact and functional. Features that remove or raise factory speed and rev limits are intended for closed-course use only. These calibrations are not CARB-certified, and the customer is responsible for compliance with all applicable laws, including the emissions and inspection requirements of their jurisdiction.
The GTS difference: a real tune built for your exact car, not one calibration with three names on a dropdown. We’ve got the injectors and turbo kits to back it up, and the in-house support to actually run it. Tuning VW, Audi & Porsche since 2010. Why we're different ›

VR6 12v (AFP): STAGE 1, 2 AND 3 ON ONE LISTING

Fits

VW MK4 Golf, GTI and Jetta VR6 2.8 12v, engine code AFP, 174 hp and 177 lb-ft from the factory. Pick your stage in the dropdown. The calibration is written for your car and your hardware. Not sure which code you have? Find your engine code in two minutes. The 24v (BDF and BDE) has its own listing.

What the tune does

Written for 93 octane / 98 RON and adapts to 91 / 95. Sharper throttle, a cleaner idle and more midrange pull, with better mileage when you are not in it. Speed limiter removed, rev limit raised to 7000. Tested on the street and the track to be smooth yet powerful. The 12v is not a dyno-sheet hero. It is about making the car feel strong, usable and fun to beat on.

Add boost to a 12v, get the fuel right, and it turns into a tank. Read the VR6 12v and 24v Tuning Guide for the long version.

What you need on the car

  • Timing chains and guides: the chains last, the plastic guides do not. Past 100k miles, or if the car throws timing correlation codes, or if there is a marble-in-a-can rattle from the transmission end, do the chains before you tune. A stretched chain fights the calibration the whole way.
  • Ignition: the 12v coil pack block cracks and arcs to the block, worst in damp weather, and shows up as a heavy misfire. Replace it, seal the hairline cracks, or move to an MSD setup.
  • What you do not need: a fuel pump or a clutch. Those worries come from turbo cars, where more boost means more rail pressure. A naturally aspirated VR6 never makes that demand, and the VR6 clutch is a bigger piece to begin with.

After you order

  1. Order. Choose Remote Tuning. A GTS cable ships with your order for a one-time $40 and it is yours to keep for every tune after this one. Already have one? Choose "I already have a GTS Remote Tuning cable".
  2. Read. Plug the cable into the OBD port and a Windows laptop, Windows 10 or later. An Intel Mac on Boot Camp works too. Our software identifies your ECU and saves your original calibration before anything is written.
  3. Flash. We build the calibration for your car, your hardware and your fuel. You get a message the moment it is ready, and you flash it yourself in your driveway in about ten minutes.
  4. Log. Drive, log, send. If anything wants adjusting we adjust it and you flash again. Revisions usually come back the same day, and within 72 hours at the outside.

Prefer to mail the ECU in? Mail-in is free within the USA and Canada. We flash it on the bench and send it back in one to three days. Local? An OBD flash at the shop takes 10 to 15 minutes. How remote tuning works, start to finish.

Options explained

  • Stage: pick from the table above. Stage 1 for a stock car, Stage 2 once the intake or exhaust is on.
  • Launch control: Soft (no pops) is included free. Hard 2-step / antilag is an add-on, for off-road and competition use. Pick None if you do not want it.
  • 100 octane add-on: a race gas program alongside the 93 octane map.
  • E85 add-on: an E85 program. Talk to us about fueling before you pick it.
  • Valet add-on: a reduced program for when someone else has the keys.
  • Pops and bangs: exhaust crackle on lift-off.
  • Hard cut: a hard fuel cut at the rev limit instead of the factory soft limiter.
  • IMMO delete: removes the immobilizer check so a swapped or spare ECU runs without the key and cluster handshake.
  • Spare ECU: we supply a tuned ECU so your original stays untouched on the shelf.
  • Mail or Remote: remote is what most owners pick. Mail-in if you would rather not touch a laptop. Own cable if you have tuned with us before.

Why GTS

Tuning since 2010, as Gonzo Tuning first and as GTS since 2013. Every calibration is written in house and the flashing tool is ours, not a rebadged package, and we never ask for remote access to your computer. Your original calibration is kept, so the car can go back to stock whenever you want it to. Reflashes carry a one-year warranty, and if you are not happy within 30 days you can go back to stock for a refund under our return policy. Support in English and Spanish.

Ordering from Canada or overseas

Canadian owners have ordered from us since 2014 and Canada is our second-largest market. The tune is delivered digitally, the cable is delivered within Canada with no customs and no import fees, we accept Canadian cards, and return shipping on a mail-in ECU is free. Anywhere else in the world, remote tuning needs the car, the cable and an internet connection, nothing else. We have tuned cars in Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Hungary, Puerto Rico, Panama, Costa Rica and Barbados.
