What Stage 4 does
Stage 4 is a custom calibration built around your turbo, injectors, MAF setup and fuel, for big turbo builds from GT28 class up. The factory ME7 has a hard ceiling at 2550 mbar. We run the 5120 patch, which lifts it, so the ECU can ask for what the turbo can deliver. We have done a lot of 500 to 600 whp builds on the stock ECU, and the ECU is not the limit. Every build: speed limiter removed and rev limit raised to 7500 with a stock head. Program switching and no-lift shift are included free. Previously sold as Gonzo Tuning Stage 4.
What you need on the car
- Turbo: GT28 to PT6262 class or similar. Garrett GTX2867R, GT28RS, GT2871R, GT3071R and GT35R, BorgWarner EFR 7163, Precision PT5858 and PT6262 are all common here.
- Injectors: sized for your turbo and fuel. Put yours in the order comments. Bosch 550cc, 630cc and 1000cc kits are on the site.
- MAF: a B7 S4 or B5 RS4 MAF assembly, or MAFless.
- MAP sensor: a 3 bar or 4 bar sensor for anything above 2550 mbar.
- Exhaust and intercooler: a turbo-back exhaust and a front mount intercooler.
- Clutch: an upgraded one. The factory clutch will not hold this.
- AMB: convert the returnless fuel system to return-style first.
- AWD, APH, AMU, ATC: a wideband conversion first.
Before you tune
The weak spots on a big turbo 1.8T, in the order they show up:
- Connecting rods: the stock rods go first. Plan on forged rods for anything meant to be driven reliably.
- Exhaust valves and valvetrain: next in line after the rods.
Past that, more power comes from cams and an intake manifold.
Check before the first flash: no vacuum or boost leaks (a smoke or pressure test), and a diverter valve rather than a blow-off valve. The 1.8T 20v Tuning Guide has the long version.
After you order

- Order. Choose Remote Tuning, the right path for a build this custom. A GTS cable ships with your order for a one-time $40 and it is yours to keep for every tune after this one. Already have one? Choose "I already have a GTS Remote Tuning cable".
- Read. Plug the cable into the OBD port and a Windows laptop, Windows 10 or later. An Intel Mac on Boot Camp works too. Our software identifies your ECU and saves your original calibration before anything is written.
- Flash. We build the calibration for your engine code and your build. You get a message the moment it is ready, and you flash it yourself in your driveway in about ten minutes.
- Log. Drive, log, send. A big turbo build takes a revision or two to dial in, and we read every log. Revisions usually come back the same day, and within 72 hours at the outside. If the car feels off after a flash, send us a log first: a boost leak reads like a tuning problem.
Prefer to mail the ECU in? Mail-in is free within the USA and Canada, and you get a base calibration for your build. How remote tuning works, start to finish.
Options explained
- Adjustable Launch Control: Soft (No pops) is included free. Hard (2 Step/Antilag) is an add-on, for off-road and competition use. Pick None if you do not want it.
- Addons for Program Switching: Stage 4 runs Stock and Tuned on one flash, switched from the driver's seat with no laptop. Each add-on program, E85, 100 Octane or Valet, is extra.
- IMMO / Immobilizer delete: removes the immobilizer check so a swapped or spare ECU runs without the key and cluster handshake.
- Hard Cut Rev Limiter: a hard fuel cut at the rev limit instead of the factory soft limiter.
- Pops and Bangs (Exhaust Crackle): exhaust crackle on lift-off.
- I need an ECU (Spare ECU): we supply a tuned ECU so your original stays untouched on the shelf.
- Mail or Remote Tuning: pick "I want the Remote Tuning Service", "I already have a GTS Remote Tuning cable" or "Mail Service (Canada/USA)", as in the steps above. "Dealer" if a shop is doing the install for you, and we deal with them directly.

Why GTS
Tuning since 2010, as Gonzo Tuning first and as GTS since 2013. Every calibration is written in house and the flashing tool is ours, not a rebadged package, and we never ask for remote access to your computer. Your original calibration is kept, so the car can go back to stock whenever you want it to. The tune is delivered digitally, the cable is delivered within Canada with no customs and no import fees, we accept Canadian cards, and return shipping on a mail-in ECU is free. Anywhere else in the world, remote tuning needs the car, the cable and an internet connection, nothing else.
